Levi's Limited Edition 501 Day Celebration Collection

Celebrating 144 years in the making

On May 20th, 1873, Levi’s® invented a simple jean that would forever change the way people dress. For over a century, the 501® jean has been worn, torn, repaired, mixed, mastered and styled every way possible. Worn by generations – from workers to rock stars to Presidents – the 501® jean defines style and self-expression and over the years has carefully evolved into a family of coveted fits, continuously being redefined across the globe.

To celebrate the birthday of the original blue jean, Levi’s® is releasing a limited edition 501® Day celebration collection on May 20th, 2017. The range includes 501® day pins and a trio of jeans/shorts/trucker vest of which there are only 501® of each. In addition to the collection, Levi's® has created a documentary: The 501® Jean: Stories of an Original which celebrates the 501® Jean’s influence on popular culture. The 5th episode of the 501® Documentary Series will launch: The 501® Jean: Stories of an Original, Music. The latest 501® documentary explores the relationship between music history, Levi’s® and the 501®, featuring iconic musicians such as Solange and Snoop Dogg.

In its 144-year-old history, the iconic 501® jean has always had an undeniable association with music, both on and off the stage. To celebrate the way music and Levi’s® are inextricably intertwined, the 501® Day celebration collection features three pieces that honor rock ‘n’ roll.  The collection features hand-distressed denim, scribbled embroidery and vintage customizations. The Levi’s® design team went on a road trip to the American music capitals of Austin, Nashville, New York and San Francisco, doodling and sketching memories captured from each leg of the tour. These visual remembrances make up the celebration collection with nods to each city– bats for Austin, Golden Gate Bridge for San Francisco, Folk City for New York, Music Row for Nashville and more.

"We took a pair of old 501®s, battered and worn, graffiti'd them all over and plastered them up with hand embroideries and patches. I thought 'they're so complicated, we're never going to reproduce these' - but we did!" explains Jonathan Cheung, the Head of Design at Levi’s® Brand.

In addition to the 501® Day celebration collection, Levi’s® is also calling on fans of the brand to create a video homage of how they live in their 501® jeans, the content of which will be stitched together to capture the energy and spirit of the iconic original blue jean.
